What is the difference between astronomy and astrophysics?


Astronomy and Astrophysics are often confused between many students and scholars because there are many common themes. Perhaps they are similar to the scientific term, but let's take a closer look at each other's definition.
The difference between astronomy and astrophysics is clear to us



First of all; where are we from the universe? We are on Earth, which occupies the third place in the solar system. Our solar system is located in Milky Way, which contains about 200 billion stars along with planetary systems.

According to the Oxford University Physics Dictionary, astronomy is defined as the science of studying the universe outside the Earth's atmosphere.


What is the definition of astrophysics?

Is a branch of astronomy that deals with the study of physical processes associated with celestial bodies; it deals primarily with the energy of star systems and the relationship between this energy and evolution of the system.

Astronomy is therefore more comprehensive because it deals with any scientific exploration in outer space; astrophysics is specifically concerned with the study of the physics of stars, planets and black holes, including their evolution through millions and perhaps billions of years.

1. Astrophysics

2 - The biology of astronomy: deals with the study of the emergence and evolution of biological systems in the universe.

3. Astrophysics of plasma: deals with the study of plasma in outer space.

4 - Solar physics: deals with the study of the sun in general and its interaction with the rest of the solar system and interstellar medium.

5- Planetary Science: It is interested in studying planets, satellites, and planetary systems.

6. Astronomical measurements: It is concerned with studying the positions of the objects in the sky and the changes that may occur. It also deals with the system of coordinates used for the movement of objects in our galaxy.

7. Relative Astrophysics: deals with the study of the effects of general and special relativity in the framework of astrophysics, including gravitational waves, black holes and gravitational lens.

8. Interstellar astrophysics: means the study of interstellar medium, interstellar medium, and cosmic dust.

9. Astrophysics: A link between the disciplines of chemistry and astronomy; it deals with the study of the chemical elements in outer space on a larger scale than the solar system, as well as studying the interactions of these elements with radiation.

There are many other specialized branches; in general, most of these disciplines may be available only in a few universities and research institutes around the world.


To bring the picture closer to your mind, to imagine the difference between astronomy and astrophysics, imagine that you have a telescope in your yard to watch the night sky to track and observe some stars in the solar system. So you are now on the astronomical side!

If you decide to bring a paper and pencil and use some mathematical equations to determine the size of a star to turn into a black hole one day, then you are in astrophysics.
